Different Names For Domestic Violence

It can feel overwhelming with all the different ways that Domestic Violence is presented. While DV is an umbrella term of sorts, some of the following terms are not interchangeable.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE is a term that originated with the idea that the father/husband was the abuser and the wife/mother was the victim. Now the general idea is that DV takes place within a household and can be between ANY two people within that household.

INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE or IPV can ONLY occur between romantic partners who may or may not be living together in the same household.

FAMILY VIOLENCE is a general term of violence between family members. It is also used in legal code. In Georgia, FV means that one or more of the following acts between past or present spouses, co-parents, parents and children, step-family, foster family, or other persons living or formerly living in the household: felony, battery, assault, destruction of property, stalking, etc.

TEEN DATING VIOLENCE refers to relationships between people aged 11-24. While it is similar to the standard definition of domestic violence, TDV has nuances that only apply to younger people who may not have complete agency due to things like school, no car, no income, etc. This can include middle school, high school, and college aged relationships.
