Economic Abuse: The Basics

Economic abuse is a major factor in abusive relationships. In fact, economic abuse occurs in 98 percent of abusive relationships. Every day, survivors of domestic violence face complex economic barriers while trying to leave their abusers and again when trying to establish a new life for themselves and their children. For many survivors, these barriers prevent them from reaching their goals of safety and stability…keep them from leaving the relationship, force them to return to their abusers, and lead to long term financial problems impacting their health and well-being. This online course is designed to give advocates a basic understanding of economic abuse and some helpful tools for working with survivors. The objectives of this course are:

Define economic abuse

Identify specific tactics of economic abuse

Explore specific economic barriers that survivors face

Learn ways to safety plan with survivors around economic abuse

This course is free of charge and open to the public through GCADV’s Online Training Institute at www.gcadvtraining.com.
